Different approaches for interpretation and reporting of immunohistochemistry analysis results in the bone tissue – a review

Abstract: BackgroundImmunohistochemistry (IHC) is a well-established, widely accepted method in both clinical and experimental parts of medical science. It allows receiving valuable information about any process in any tissue, and especially in bone. Each year the amount of data, received by IHC, grows in geometric progression. But the lack of standardization, especially on the post-analytical stage (interpreting and reporting of results), makes the comparison of the results of different studies impossible.MethodsCompre… Show more

“…8 However, this method has evident disadvantages such as only permitting a semiquantitative evaluation of biomarker production that cannot completely correlate with the real expression and the difficulty in assessing the immunostaining when it is not present in a single cell population. 13 Depending on the polarization status, 2 different phenotypes of macrophages, named M1 and M2, have been recognized. Briefly, M1 or classically activated macrophages are involved in the response against intracellular pathogens throughout the secretion of proinflammatory cytokines and iNOS, whereas M2 or alternatively activated macrophages have immunoregulatory functions and play a role in tissue remodeling.…”
