Different Presentations of Renal Cell Cancer on Ultrasound and Computerized Tomography

Abstract: Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most common malignant tumor of the kidney. The major goal of imaging techniques is to correctly differentiate between benign and malignant renal lesions. We present the cases of six patients with renal masses that were interpreted completely differently based on ultrasound (US) and computerized tomography (CT) findings. From January 1st, 2008 to March 1st, 2014, 307 patients from our center underwent nephrectomy for RCC. In all patients US and CT were performed before the opera… Show more

“…AML, the most common renal benign neoplasm, contains varying proportion of thick-walled blood vessels, smooth muscle, and fat tissue [4]. Most AMLs need only active surveillance rather than invasive treatment, but for RCC, especially for clear cell RCC, surgical resection is the preferred therapy [15,16]. Therefore, it is important to differentiate them for the prognostic evaluation and clinical treatment decision.…”

“…Detection and treatment of RCC in the earliest possible stage is the ultimate goal. 15 Thus, the role of radiologists in imaging the kidney is vital. Compared to CT and MRI, CUS can be used as the first-line imaging modality to detect kidney mass owing to some advantages, such as accessibility, low expense, nonionizing radiation, immediate, and dynamic imaging.…”
