Different prognostic indices in 310 patients with tonsillar carcinomas

Abstract: Earlier reported TNM-based stage modifications are all very useful predictors of survival in tonsillar carcinomas. In addition, age, gender, total radiation dose, and duration of radiotherapy were important prognostic factors. We propose that both host and treatment factors should be tested carefully when building new prognostic indices in tonsillar carcinomas.

“…The treatment and prognosis have previously been reported in detail for these 310 patients. 23 Complete follow-up and accurate cause of death were obtained by direct patient knowledge, review of outpatient and hospital charts, autopsy findings, direct contact with local hospitals, family physicians, or in some cases by next of kin. The Norwegian Data Inspectorate and the Regional Ethical Committee of South Norway approved the study.…”

“…Patients without evidence of disease or with remaining tumor masses in the primary site and/or locoregional lymph nodes were scored as complete or partial responders, respectively. In the complete responder group, an advanced tumor and lymph node staging (T [3][4] and N 2-3 ) was diagnosed in 97% and 87% of all patients, respectively. In the partial responder group, 100% of all patients had a T [3][4] and N 2-3 staging.…”

Chemotherapy was administered to 21 and 8 patients with complete or partial tumor remission, respectively, and did not affect outcome in a significant manner.…”

“…Die prognostische Relevanz der Resektionsränder bei HNOwie auch anderen Tumoren wurde mehrfach untersucht und bestätigt [24,34], ebenso die des Geschlechts [12], des NStatus [5] und der Anämie [10,13,14], wobei sich in unserem Kollektiv die unmittelbar postoperative Anämie (Hb < 12 g/dl) als prognostisch entscheidend für alle Endpunkte erwies.…”
