Different roles of capsule endoscopy and double-balloon enteroscopy in obscure small intestinal diseases

Abstract: AIM:To compare the roles of capsule endoscopy (CE) and double-balloon enteroscopy (DBE) in the diagnosis of obscure small bowel diseases. December 2014, 88 patients were included in this study; the patients had undergone gastroscopy, colonoscopy, radiological small intestinal barium meal, abdominal computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging scan and mesenteric angiography, but their diagnoses were still unclear. The patients with gastrointestinal obstructions, fistulas, strictures, or cardiac pacemake… Show more

“…VCE is a simple and noninvasive imaging technique for the examination of small bowel. Previous studies showed that VCE is able to show the source of bleeding in the small intestine in patients with potential small bowel bleeding [ 4 , 15 20 ]. In patients with potential small bowel bleeding and in whom upper and lower GI system endoscopies cannot define the source of bleeding next step in the diagnostic algorithm is proposed to be VCE [ 1 3 ].…”

“…The definite diagnostic yield of CE is only 20-30%, while DBE accounts for 60-70% of the diagnostic yield for intestinal diseases. 17 However, CE is suitable for diagnosing scattered, small and multiple lesions, as well as active bleeding; it is convenient, noninvasive, secure and comfortable. In contrast, the DBE procedure is uncomfortable, less tolerated and difficult to complete; these factors influence its diagnosis.…”

“…The remainder of the small bowel cannot be accessed without the use of video capsule endoscopy (CE) or double balloon enteroscopy (DBE). The definitive diagnostic yield of CE is as low as 20-30%, whilst DBE accounts for 60-70% of the diagnostic yield for intestinal disease [13]. However, CE is suitable for diagnosing scattered, small, or multiple lesions, in addition to active bleeding.…”
