Different trajectories of morphological overspecification and irregularity under imperfect language learning

Abstract: This chapter investigates how morphological complexity is related to socioecological parameters. Results of an iterated artificial language learning experiment are reported, with the focus on how two facets of complexity, overspecification and irregularity, change over time. The presence of imperfect learners in a transmission chain leads to a much stronger decrease in morphological overspecification in the language. Overspecification, however, does not usually get fully eliminated, and its partial decrease of… Show more

“…One possibility is that once the process of simplification is started by the three short-term-learner generations, it will be continued by subsequent generations regardless of their learning time. In other words, long-time learners reproduce the initial languages with complex, but consistent structure rather faithfully, but continue to simplify input languages with inconsistent structure (which may be less overspecified, but also more irregular) [ 76 ].…”

“…Changes introduced by adult learners may spread to others in the population. When native language users have frequent interactions with non-natives, they have a higher probability of adopting [ 23 , 39 , 40 ] and amplifying [ 41 ] simplified forms, and also of producing simpler ‘foreigner directed speech’ [ 31 , 42 ].…”

“…Such theories, in our view, are extremely important since they make complexity more than a parameter of cross-linguistic variation: It becomes a meaningful parameter involved in explanatory theories. These theories, if they are correct (which we currently consider an open question), contribute to our understanding of why languages are shaped the way they are, how language change is influenced by social interaction, and how language is organized and functions in the brain (Berdicevskis and Semenuks, 2020).…”
