Differential chromosomal markers between sympatric karyomorphs of the fish Hoplias malabaricus (Bloch, 1794) (Characiformes: Erythrinidae)

Abstract: Abstract. Cytogenetic analyses were performed on Hoplias malabaricus (Bloch, 1794) from the Taquari River, Parana River drainage, revealing two sympatric karyomorphs. One karyomorph was characterized by 2n = 40 m/sm and 2n = 39 m/sm chromosomes for females and males, respectively, and an X 1 X 1 X 2 X 2 /X 1 X 2 Y sex chromosome system. In the second karyomorph, specimens showed 2n = 42 m/sm chromosomes, without sex-related heteromorphism. Both karyomorphs were characterized by a distribution of heterochroma… Show more

“…Within the Parana River basin, the most usual cases of sympatry are among karyomorphs A/C, commonly found in the lower Parana River, and A/D, usually found in the upper Parana River (Bertollo et al, 2000;Rosa et al, 2009Rosa et al, , 2010. Moreover, in the upper Parana River, one A/C/D sympatry case has also been reported (Pazza & Júlio, 2003).…”

“…To date, seven easily distinguishable karyomorphs (A-G) were identified based on chromosome number, chromosome morphology and the presence or absence of sex chromosomes (Bertollo et al, 2000). Although many cases of sympatric karyomorphs have been described, there is no evidence of hybridization between them until now (Scavone et al, 1994;Lopes et al, 1998;Bertollo et al, 2000;Pazza & Júlio, 2003;Rosa et al, 2010).…”

“…Some karyomorphs as A, C and F have a wide geographic distribution throughout South America, whereas others are either endemic or restricted to specific drainages in Brazil (Bertollo et al 2000, Da Rosa et al 2014). In some cases, two and even more karyomorphs have been found coexisting in sympatric conditions without detection of hybrid forms (Lopes and Fenocchio 1994, Scavonne et al 1994, Lopes et al 1998, Lemos et al 2002, Pazza and Júlio 2003, Born and Bertollo 2006, Da Rosa et al 2009a, 2009b, 2010). …”
