Differential Expression of a Set of Genes in Follicular and Classic Variants of Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma

Abstract: Fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNA) is currently the best initial diagnostic test for evaluation of a thyroid nodule. FNA cytology cannot discriminate between benign and malignant thyroid nodules in up to 30% of thyroid nodules. Therefore, an adjunct to FNA is needed to clarify these lesions as benign or malignant. Using differential display-polymerase chain reaction method, the gene expression differences between follicular and classic variants of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) and benign thyroid nodules w… Show more

“…The NDUFC2 gene has higher mutation rates and has been recommended as a target candidate for treating colorectal carcinoma tumorigenesis 33 . The NDUFC2 gene also shows lower expression in papillary thyroid carcinoma patients 34 . Additionally, complex I deficiency is mainly caused by nuclear-encoded subunit gene mutations 35 , and our results showed that both the protein expression level and enzyme activity of complex I were decreased after irradiation.…”

“…BRAF K601E is very rare in FTC and was only described in one case in previous publications (6,7). In addition, the overall gene expression profile in FVPTC is distinct from classic PTC, underlining these differences (8,9). In summary, FVPTC shares features of classic PTC and FTC on the morphological, genetic, and prognostic level.…”

“…A comparative study of MCM3 protein expression levels was also done in follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma (FVPTC), classic variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma (CVPTC), and multi-nodular goitre (MNG) tissues. MCM3 protein expression was higher in FVPTC and CVPTC as compared to MNG (Igci et al, 2011;Igci et al, 2014). This shows that MCM3 might be used as a suitable marker in order to distinguish FVPTC and CVPTC from MNG.…”
