Differentiating Two Closely Related Alexandrium Species Using Comparative Quantitative Proteomics

Abstract: Alexandrium minutum and Alexandrium tamutum are two closely related harmful algal bloom (HAB)-causing species with different toxicity. Using isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation (iTRAQ)-based quantitative proteomics and two-dimensional differential gel electrophoresis (2D-DIGE), a comprehensive characterization of the proteomes of A. minutum and A. tamutum was performed to identify the cellular and molecular underpinnings for the dissimilarity between these two species. A total of 1436 proteins… Show more

“…Table 2 outlines differences in microorganisms, toxins, and mitigation techniques across environments, detailing algal species linked to various poisoning syndromes [140][141][142][143][144][145][146][147][148][149][150][151]. The importance of timely monitoring and detection to prevent toxin spread and protect public health and the environment is reiterated [152][153][154]. The table also highlights the invasive nature of certain algal species and their impacts on local ecosystems.…”

“…So far, the most common reported toxic HAB in the Philippines is paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) caused by consuming shellfish that accumulated Pyrodinium bahamense, Gymnodinium catenatum, or toxic Alexandrium spp. from affected waters [11][12][13]. A review of HABs in the Philippines and Malaysia has been published recently [14].…”
