Diffuse anterior retinoblastoma: current concepts

Abstract: Diffuse anterior retinoblastoma is a rare variant of retinoblastoma seeding in the area of the vitreous base and anterior chamber. Patients with diffuse anterior retinoblastoma are older than those with the classical types, with the mean age being 6.1 years. The original cells of diffuse anterior retinoblastoma are supposed to be cone precursor. Patients most commonly present with pseudouveitis, pseudohypopyon, and increased intraocular pressure. The retina under fundus examination is likely to be normal, and … Show more

“…Certain genes may convert between oncogene and tumor suppressor under certain circumstances, such as TGF- β and p38. According to the literatures, TGF- β could suppress tumor cell growth via inducing the synthesis of 4EBP1 [ 37 ] and cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) inhibitors such as p15, p21, and p57 [ 38 , 39 ] and promote tumor cell diffusion by the induction of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) to make tumor cells get more invasion and easy to form metastases [ 40 ]. Similarly, p38 also could regulate a variety of cellular responses.…”

“…Retinoblastoma (RB) is a common intraocular tumor in infants and young children, which seriously endangers the vision and life of children [1,2]. Early and timely treatment of RB patients can achieve better survival rate and retention of visual function [3,4], while the tumor will grow and spread rapidly within the eyeball, invade the vitreous body and subretinal space, spread to the skull along the optic nerve, leading to the death of the patient, without timely diagnosis or treatment [5][6][7].…”

“…Eyes that harbor a retinoblastoma characteristically display increased intraocular pressure. [ 17 ] In our example, the patient is noted to have an intraocular pressure of 25 mm Hg, which is above the normal range, observed in the eye affected by the retinoblastoma (left eye). Measurement messages can be used to represent normal measurements; for instance, in our example the right eye was not affected by retinoblastoma and displayed a normal intraocular pressure of 15 mm Hg, measured with the Perkins tonometer.…”
