Diffusion and persistence of false rumors in social media networks: implications of searchability on rumor self-correction on Twitter

Abstract: Social media networks (SMN) such as Facebook and Twitter are infamous for facilitating the spread of potentially false rumors. Although it has been argued that SMN enable their users to identify and challenge false rumors through collective efforts to make sense of unverified information—a process typically referred to as self-correction—evidence suggests that users frequently fail to distinguish among rumors before they have been resolved. How users evaluate the veracity of a rumor can depend on the appraisal… Show more

“…It is very challenging to effectively intervene in information-information coevolution propagation dynamics on complex networks by combining the characteristics of network structure and propagation dynamics themselves [16]. Literature [17] proposed an index to quantitatively describe the influence of potential connections of the network in promoting information-information coevolution propagation, aiming at the symmetrical propagation of two types of information in the coevolution system. Literature [18] proposed an information-information coevolution propagation intervention strategy based on optimal latent connections.…”

“…Most of the studies in this category look into Twitter and employ quantitative analysis of large datasets (Panda et al, 2020; Rodak, 2020; Walsh and Baker, 2021). Concerning populism and disinformation (seven articles), the searchability affordance of social media was found to be an effective tool to counter the spread of fake narratives as it can facilitate the self-correction of the users (Apuke and Omar, 2021; Eismann, 2021; Islam et al, 2020).…”

“… 68 Several studies thus far have linked misinformation and rumors with media messaging. 69 Rumors related to COVID-19 on social media enhanced panic and fear among the public and fueled panic buying of products, which negatively affected the supply chain and increased food insecurity among the public. 70 In other words, rumors can be a catalyst for panic buying behavior.…”
