Diffusion Coefficients of Ethers in Supercritical Carbon Dioxide

Abstract: The Taylor-Aris tracer response method was applied to measure binary diffusion coefficients, D 12 , in supercritical carbon dioxide under quasi-infinite-dilution conditions, by means of the Giddings and Seager chromatographic technique. Diethyl ether, diisopropyl ether, and tetrahydrofuran have been studied at 40, 50, and 60°C in the pressure range 80-160 atm. The resulting binary diffusion coefficients are on the order of 10 -4 cm 2 /s. The influence of molecular weight, temperature, pressure, carbon dioxide … Show more

“…In a further study, Chan et al [39] measured the diffusion coefficients of aromatic compounds, containing one polar group, in acetone at 298.2 K, using the Taylor dispersion method [42][43][44][45]. Again, a linear relationship was found between V W and 1/D 12 for the non-associated pseudo-planar solutes.…”

“…The diffusion experiments of Chen and Chan [39] were designed to probe the effects of hydrogen bonding. In this work, Chen and Chan measured diffusion coefficients, of aromatic solutes containing one polar functional group in ethanol at 298.2 K, using the Taylor [42][43][44][45] dispersion method. The solutes studied are all pseudoplanar in shape.…”

“…The equation can be used to calculate the selfdiffusion coefficient of real fluids using the Boltzmann effective hard-sphere diameter [15] and Chandler's rough hard-sphere theory [16]. The results of the proposed equation show good agreement with the experimental data compared with other previously mentioned equations.…”

“…An excellent review on this theoretical background was published by Silva and Liu [14]. Some of these equations were expanded to calculate the mutual diffusion coefficient of a binary diffusion system because of their general validity and satisfactory accuracy [7,10,11,15].…”
