Diffusion tensor tractography of the temporal stem on the inferior limiting sulcus

Abstract: On the inferior limiting sulcus, the posteroinferior insular point is a reliable landmark of the posterior limit of the optic radiations. The limen insulae, anterior tip of the temporal horn, and posteroinferior insular point may be used to localize the white matter fibers of the temporal stem in analyzing magnetic resonance imaging or during surgery.

“…In a recent review Mandelstam (2012) suggests that there may be significant hemispheric asymmetries within individuals and cites studies that have postulated that a leftward asymmetry of the OR may be due to expanded language areas in the left posterior temporal lobe that have displaced the OR on that side (Jeelani et al, 2010;Wang et al, 2008 ).…”

“…It has been considered to have an important role as a reciprocal route of tumor, infection, seizure spread, and a number of disorders including amnesia, traumatic brain injury, Alzheimer disease because of a bridge between the temporal lobe and other regions of the brain 12) . Recently, diffusion tensor imaging tractography and fiber dissection technique which has been very helpful to understand the white matter fibers of the brain, were used to describe the temporal stem 4,5,12,17,18,22,23) . However, the anatomical definition of the temporal stem has shown the inconsistency as in the existing descriptions by several authors.…”
