Diffusive Dynamics of Nanoparticles in Arrays of Nanoposts

Abstract: The diffusive dynamics of dilute dispersions of nanoparticles of diameter 200-400 nm were studied in microfabricated arrays of nanoposts using differential dynamic microscopy and single particle tracking. Posts of diameter 500 nm and height 10 μm were spaced by 1.2-10 μm on a square lattice. As the spacing between posts was decreased, the dynamics of the nanoparticles slowed. Moreover, the dynamics at all length scales were best represented by a stretched exponential rather than a simple exponential. Both the … Show more

“…For example, arrays of nanoscale posts, spaced from 10 µm to 1 µm apart in a microfluidic slit, are representative of a complex confined medium. 159 As the spacing between posts decreases and confinement increases, the diffusion of the nanoparticles slows and multiple relaxation times emerge, which is consistent with the onset of dynamic heterogeneity and the approach to vitrification.…”

“…A typical application of DDM is to determine the diffusion constant of colloidal particles dispersed in a liquid medium 11,16,17,26,27 . If the viscosity of the host liquid is known, DDM behaves as a powerful particle sizing tool, in that it enables one determining accurately the size of the colloidal particles.…”
