Digital dermatitis control in the dairy herd: incorporating the ‘blitz’ treatment approach

Abstract: In August 2016 a digital dermatitis (DD) control programme, incorporating ‘blitz’ treatment, was initiated on a commercial herd of approximately 150 Holsten Friesian cows on a farm in South Wales. The herd had been endemically infected with DD for several years with repeated outbreaks, despite the targeted treatment of individually affected cows and regular footbathing of the milking herd. An initial assessment identified that 38% of the herd had at least one hind foot with a DD lesion (active, healing, dorman… Show more

“…Subsequent ex vivo assays assessed the effectiveness of CAZ barriers at 'locking in' pre-applied therapeutics. Typically, digital dermatitis treatment entails repeated applications of antibiotic spray to an affected area until a healing lesion is achieved 25 . Sprays comprise an active antimicrobial (e.g.…”

“…These animals often have multiple limbs affected which can make individual treatment in a foot crush a logistical challenge, even for an average-sized herd. Nonetheless, checking the whole herd and treating all visible lesions in a crush has been adopted by some farms – it has been named the ‘blitz DD treatment’ when applied in all age groups at one point in time (Pedersen 2019).…”

“…Complete cure or elimination of digital dermatitis from farms is difficult and was reported only once (Yeruham and Perl, 1998). My recommended approach to substantially reduce the prevalence of digital dermatitis in a dairy herd expands on the 'blitz' approach by Pedersen (2019) and the topical treatment protocol by Alsaaod et al (2022). It involves the screening of all age and production groups on the farm using pen walks or in-parlor scoring to identify animals with any digital dermatitis lesion.…”
