Digital Image Analysis of Cigarette Filter Stains as an Indicator of Compensatory Smoking

Abstract: Objective: Cigarette filters trap a significant portion of carcinogen-containing smoke particulate and may provide an indication of cigarette constituent exposure. A technique for quantifying filter tar staining with digital imaging has shown predictive value between typical total puff volume and filter tar stain intensity. The current study uses smoking topography data acquired during an examination of compensatory smoking of Quest cigarettes and digital analyses of the tar stains of the spent Quest cigarette… Show more

“…Nicotine, the primary addictive compound in tobacco, is metabolized to cotinine (COT), and then to 3'-hydroxycotinine (3HC), predominantly by the hepatic CYP2A6 enzyme (2, 3). Smokers can extract varying levels of nicotine by altering their smoking topography (e.g., puff volume, number of puffs) (46), which in turn can affect level of toxin exposure (68). …”

“…Forty per cent of participants had at least a 20% increase in carbon monoxide boost when smoking the lowest nicotine level Quest compared to the highest nicotine level Quest. Further, a digital analysis technique7 of the tar stain intensity in the used Quest filters suggests a relative increase in carcinogen-containing tar when smoking the lower nicotine level Quest compared to the higher nicotine level 8…”

“…Techniques of smoking, including frequency, volume of puffi ng, and types of cigarette fi lters [140] , also affect which chemicals enter into the body. Manufacturerbased differences in types of cigarettes or tobacco smoked, cigarette additives, inhaled, or chewed have made the defi nition of a standard smoker diffi cult to achieve.…”
