Digital immunization registry: evidence for the impact of mHealth on enhancing the immunization system and improving immunization coverage for children under one year old in Vietnam

Abstract: Conclusions: A digital immunization registry that includes SMS reminders can improve immunization coverage and timeliness of vaccination, thereby strengthening the quality and effectiveness of immunization programs. Integrating this system into the national health information system and leveraging it for other health programs, such as maternal and child health and nutrition as well as infectious disease control, can bring more benefits to the health care system in Vietnam.

“…The use of DHIs by immunization programs has been encouraging for the uptake and adherence to vaccination schedules. For example, improvements in vaccination coverage were observed following the introduction of an EIR in Vietnam [ 12 , 13 ]. The BID Initiative ( http://bidinitiative.org/ ), led by PATH and funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, worked in partnership with the governments of Tanzania and Zambia to introduce an EIR at the sub-national level in both countries within 5 years as part of a multi-component complex intervention package that focuses on data use capacity-building.…”

“…3,8,9 As country demand to integrate digital solutions to improve health outcomes is increasing, 10 there are also more examples of LMICs developing, implementing, and scaling EIRs across many countries in Latin America, Africa, and Asia. [11][12][13][14] The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Gavi, and other funders have invested substantially in EIRs in LMICs to improve immunization data quality and use to increase vaccine coverage and equity. However, few EIR implementations in LMICs have been rigorously evaluated.…”

“…The delay in treatment was defined as starting the antibiotics 3 days or more after the first clinical signs or symptoms appeared [ 17 ]. According to the expanded program on vaccination in Vietnam [ 18 ], tuberculosis vaccine is recommended as soon as possible within 30 days of birth. Three doses of pentavalent vaccine (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, hepatitis B, and Haemophilus influenzae type B) and oral polio vaccine are recommended at 2–4 months.…”
