Digital technology dilemma: on unlocking the soil quality index conundrum

Abstract: Knowledge of the interactions between soil systems, management practices, and climatic extremes are critical for prescription-based sustainable practices that reduce environmental pollution/footprints, disruption of food supply chains, food contamination, and thus improve socio-economic wellbeing. Soil quality status and dynamics under climate change present both a hazard which may not be remedied by simply adding chemicals or improved by crop varieties, and an opportunity (e.g., by indicating impact of a shif… Show more

“…The predominant land textures in arable areas primarily depend on precipitation to sustain SWCs, which is crucial for supporting arid vegetation and facilitating the ecohydrological cycle (Xu et al 2023 ). The SWCs in arid and semi-arid regions exhibit increased heterogeneity in response to variations in precipitation patterns and vegetation types (Obade and Gaya 2021 ). Due to the exhaustive evaporation factor, the smaller precipitation index has insignificant effects on SWC (Wilson et al 2004 ).…”

“…Digital technology and services can reduce environmental pollution and ensure the safety of agricultural products. Digital technology and services enable the development of agricultural databases, dynamically maintain the balance between crop growth needs and agricultural production inputs, regulate the interaction between soil, cultivation management patterns, and climate, achieve resource conservation and environmental friendliness, and contribute to carbon neutrality [19,20]. In addition, digital regulation and intelligent sorting build digital grading standards for agricultural products, provide the technical conditions for strict product certification and labeling systems, raise consumer concerns about social and environmental sustainability, and promote sustainable agricultural development [21,22].…”
