Digital Twins applied to the implementation of Safe-by-Design strategies in nano-processes for the reduction of airborne emission and occupational exposure to nano-forms

Abstract: Digital Twins (DTs) are one of the most promising enabling technologies for the deployment of the factory of the future and the Industry 4.0 framework. DTs could be labelled as an inherently Safe-by-Design (SbD) strategy and can be applied at different stages in the life cycle of a process. The EU-funded project ASINA has the ambition to promote coherent, applicable and scientifically sound SbD nano-practices. In particular, in the field of nanomanufacturing, ASINA intends to deliver innovative SbD solutions a… Show more

“…ASINA is exploring the digital twins technology for a spray coating manufacturing process. 1 SABYDOMA's industrial case studies in this sector examine materials such as CuO, TiO 2 and SiC/Ni composite electroplated coatings. SAbyNA targets two main sectors with their case studies: paints and additive manufacturing (3D printing).…”

“…Thinking about a future sustainable smart manufacturing, process parameter specific emissions and concentration levels can be used by digital technologies, such as Digital Twins, as input data to predict in real time environmental emissions and workers' exposures, and to optimize the sustainability of the manufacturing process itself [48].…”

“…In the first pillar, ASINA adds lower cost and greener synthesis procedures by considering different materials and process design hypothesis (Ortelli et al, 2019). In the second, ASINA-SMM explores novel digital technologies and artificial intelligence for safe production while maintaining operational excellence (Ortelli et al, 2020;López De Ipiña et al, 2021). In the third, ASINA-SMM merges life cycle assessment (LCA) and life cycle costing (LCC) in order to ensure the safety, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness (Perucca and Benveniste, 2010;Oreto et al, 2021).…”
