Digital twins to enable better precision and personalized dementia care

Abstract: In this perspective paper, we want to highlight the potential benefits of incorporating digital twins to support better dementia care. In particular, we assert that, by doing so, it is possible to ensure greater precision regarding dementia care while simultaneously enhancing personalization. Digital twins have been used successfully in manufacturing to enable better prediction and tailoring of solutions to meet required needs, and thereby have enabled more effective and efficient deployment of resources. We d… Show more

“…In the context of precision medicine, the HDT approach can be defined as “virtual mirror of ourselves that allows us to simulate our personal medical history and state of health using data-driven analytical algorithms and theory-driven physical knowledge” 2 . Recently, HDT has been applied in multiple disease areas, such as oncology 3 5 , geriatrics 6 , cardiology 7 12 , infectious disease 13 , genomic medicine 14 , neurodegenerative diseases 15 , 16 , vascular medicine 17 , and mental health 18 . The applications of HDT include patient safety, wellbeing management, and health care decision support 19 .…”

“…Integrating DT can better support the care of chronic diseases, such as dementia, thus ensuring greater precision and personalisation. 69 It will also be possible to transmit information of treatment methods and drugs to the model for verification in optimising the treatment plan and finally realise the early diagnosis or prevention of diseases in seniors. 70 The DT will track an individual's life journey, using data collected by wearable sensors and the lifestyle registered by the individual for the transition from clinical medicine to preventive medicine.…”
