Digital workflow for an esthetic rehabilitation using a facial and intraoral scanner and an additive manufactured silicone index: A dental technique

Abstract: The present article describes a digital workflow for planning an esthetic treatment by using a facial and intraoral scanner, the dental and open-source software design of a facially generated diagnostic waxing, and additive manufactured (AM) clear silicone indices. A virtual design was created to fabricate a unique 3-piece AM index composed of flexible, clear silicone at the labial and lingual aspects and a rigid clear custom tray. The 3-piece AM clear indexes provided advantages compared with conventional pro… Show more

“…(B) Close evaluation of the smile two-dimensional visualization, which, when transferred to the patient's mouth through the mock-up, the patient can view, a realistic estimate of the outcome with a full perception of size and volume, favoring any occlusal adjustment. 38 The CAD/CAM system allows digital dentistry with a new perspective of the workflow that involves digitizing the treatment's execution. 39 According to Lin et al, 39 one of the advantages of using CAD/CAM technology is that ceramic laminates can be manufactured from the waxing.…”

“…Using the DSDapp does not dismiss the need to perform a mock‐up. Digital planning allows a two‐dimensional visualization, which, when transferred to the patient's mouth through the mock‐up, the patient can view, a realistic estimate of the outcome with a full perception of size and volume, favoring any occlusal adjustment 38 …”

“…The smile scan was altered by erasing the teeth operating the free form tool of the selected program (Figure 2A). 17 In the present clinical situation, the objective was to wax the missing maxillary left lateral incisor including the lingual wings of the restoration (Figures 2B and 3). A small enameloplasty on the mandibular left canine was virtually simulated when adjusting occlusion in the CAD software.…”

“…The incorporation of facial digitizers in treatment planning procedures allows for 3D representation of the patient's face 12‐17 including the superimposition of 3D facial scans with intraoral scans 15‐17 . Moreover, digital scan techniques provide clinically suitable alternatives to conventional impression procedures in the manufacturing of tooth‐supported crowns and short fixed dental prostheses (FDPs) 18‐20 .…”
