Dimensional analysis of the coping strategy indicator in a sample of elderly veterans with acquired limb amputations

Abstract: The Coping Strategy Indicator (CSI), developed by Amirkhan (1990), is intended as a Ôwidely applicableÕ self-report measure of situational coping encompassing the strategies of avoidance, problem solving and seeking social support. Nonetheless, the instrumentÕs initial development phase was exclusively premised on Californian samples, prompting Parker and Endler (1992) to highlight the need for cross-validation with other populations. The aim of this study was to examine the factor structure of the Coping Stra… Show more

“…This thirtythree-item self-report questionnaire measures the use of three coping strategies, avoidance (23)(24)(25)(26)(27). In the original version of the scale respondents are asked to identify a stressful event occurring within the last six months and to consider the manner in which they had coped with it.…”

“…On top of that, Cronbach's alpha coefficients indicate adequate internal consistency for each of the subscales ranging from 0.86 to 0.98 for Problem Solving, 0.89 to 0.98 for Seeking Social Support and from 0.77 to 0.96 for avoidance. Regarding to the internal reliabilities for the CIS, another study conducted by Desmond et al [57] in a sample of 618 British individuals with a chronic health challenge, namely amputation of a limb show that Cronbach's alpha coefficients of 0.9220 and 0.8687 were obtained for the Problem Solving and Support Seeking scales, respectively. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient calculated for the full CSI Avoidance scale was 0.79.…”

“…Principal axis factoring) u programu SPSS 22.
