Dimensionality of Coping: Factor Stability Using the Ways of Coping Questionnaire

Abstract: This study presents convergent support for the use of five empirically constructed factors from the “Ways of Coping Questionnaire.” Five coping factors were congruent with the factors reported in a study conducted by Folkman and Lazarus in 1985. The results support a concept of coping as defined by the factors, for student populations. Researchers need to explore different coping contexts to facilitate research and increase our knowledge of coping processes.

“…Explained variance ratios between 40% and 60% are expected satisfactory in the analysis carried out in social sciences (Tavşancıl, 2010: 48 quoting Scherer, Luther, Wiebe andAdams, 1988). In this research, the ratio of total variance explained of the scale is 69.094% which is above the expected level.…”

“…Having higher variance rates after factor analysis results in a stronger factor structure of the scale (Gorsuch 1974; Lee & Comrey, 1979). In social sciences, the variance rates changing in the range of 40% and 60% are accepted as sufficient (Scherer et al, 1988). According to this criteria, item 18 was extracted from the scale.…”

“…The 22-item TOSS was found to measure 40.3% of the variance in tournament satisfaction. According to the Sherer, Wiebe, Luther, and Adams (1988); this score is satisfactory for social sciences. Analysis of internal consistency reliabilities yielded Cronbach alpha coefficients of 0.93 for TOSS indicating satisfactory reliability.…”
