Photovoltaic grid-connected systems (PVGCS) promise to be a major contributor of the future global energy system. Even if no GreenHouse Gases (GHG) are emitted during their operation phase, emissions are generated by the use of fossil fuel-based energy during the manufacture, building and recycling of the components. An integrated ecodesign framework that simultaneously manages technical, economic and environmental criteria for the design and sizing of PVGCS (cradle-to-gate approach) is presented in this work. A Multi-Objective Optimization problem embedded in an external multi-objective Genetic Algorithm (NGSA II) optimization loop generates a set of Pareto solutions representing the optimal trade-off between the objectives considered. Then a decision-making tool (M-TOPSIS) selects the solution providing the best compromise. The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) method was selected to assess the environmental impact. Five commercial PV technologies were evaluated to generate alternatives of PVGCS configurations through a set of 18 objectives (two technical and one economic criteria as well as the 15 midpoint categories of the IMPACT 2002+ method). After a statistical analysis of the first results, the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) method was applied to remove redundant objectives, thus leading to only four contradictory objectives. The results highlight the advantage of the use of thin-film PV modules over crystalline-Si based PV modules.

Summary Business‐to‐business (B2B) electronics account for a significant volume of the electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) put on the market. Very little B2B waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) is reported as collected in the European Union (EU) in compliance with the WEEE Directive, which uses the policy principle of extended producer responsibility (EPR) to ensure that WEEE is managed correctly. This presents a barrier to parties looking for access to the waste. Company practice dictates the channels into which B2B WEEE flows following primary use. This article presents a study that engaged with company actors directly to get a better understanding of business information technology (IT) EEE asset management. Data were collected to determine the barriers current practice could present to the collection of B2B IT EEE at end of life and the implications of these for the development of policies and strategies for EPR. A questionnaire was developed and data were gathered from organizations in three EU countries—the United Kingdom, Germany, and France—stratified by size. Some notable findings were that there are several routes by which end‐of‐life B2B WEEE can flow. The recycling and refurbishment of B2B IT units at end of use was shown to be commonplace, but it is likely that these units enter streams where they are not reported. The actors disposing of their units did not have information on the management or disposition of these streams. It is concluded that to achieve the goals of EPR for B2B IT WEEE, the networks and the operational practices of these streams need to be better understood when developing strategies and policies.

Most design activities involve exploring and comparing existing designs. Thus, adopting an eco-conscious approach in the design exploration process can aid environmentally sustainable product design (SPD). One approach for supporting exploration in SPD is through tools based on information visualization (InfoVis). The use of InfoVis for SPD allows data-driven exploration of solutions that is rapid, direct, and supports investigation of questions that the designer may not have identified. Previous work has demonstrated the utility of InfoVis tools for different facets of the lifecycle, e.g. redesign, supply chain exploration, and life cycle assessment. These tools focus on projecting sustainability-related implications back to design. However, to fully realize their potential, future tools must synthesize data in a manner that helps designers view the effects of a design change on all downstream stages. Such tools will have to work across multiple data types, visual representations, and stakeholders. In this paper, we take the first steps towards addressing this challenge by formulating design patterns for visualization and interaction of product lifecycle data. These design patterns were synthesized by reviewing previous works that have successfully created visualization-based tools for SPD.
