Dimensions of trust in different forms of science communication: the role of information sources and channels used to acquire science knowledge

Abstract: This paper investigates the dimensions of trust and the role of information sources and channels in developing differentiated forms of science communication. The discussions from two public consultations carried out in Italy and Slovakia about controversial science-related topics were quali-quantitatively content analysed. The results show that scientific knowledge pervades diverse communication spheres, producing differentiated paths of trust in science. Each path is determined by topics (environment or healt… Show more

“…Scientists tend to construct identity boundaries with the audience in science communication; while citizen science communication tends to dissolve such boundaries with the audience. This result works in concert with the findings from many previous studies (such as Besley & Tiffany, 2023;Brondi et al, 2021;McLoughlin, 2021;Yang, 2021Yang, , 2022b. The different biases between the two groups of communicators in rational and emotional trust strategies echo Fiske and Dupree's (2014) discovery that trust in science communication is not just about logic and knowledge, but also about emotions and values, which can be summarized as "warmth" and "competence."…”

“…The communication source of a message is the initiator and controller of the entire communication process (Brondi et al, 2021). It determines the content and quantity of messages entering the message channel.…”
