Direct hemoperfusion using a polymyxin B immobilized column improves acute respiratory distress syndrome

Abstract: Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is characterized by a high mortality rate. We have studied whether direct hemoperfusion using a polymyxin B immobilized fiber column (PMX-DHP) is effective for acute lung injury (ALI) and ARDS. Two ALI and eighteen ARDS patients were evaluated, four congestive heart failure (CHF) patients were evaluated as cardiogenic pulmonary edema, and we retrospectively compared the outcome with ten patients with ARDS who had been hospitalized between 1990 and 1998 as the untreate… Show more

“…PMX-DHP is an effective radical treatment for septic shock. However, although it was reported that PMX-DHP improved lung function in acute lung injury and acute respiratory distress syndrome, 12 and renal function in combination with CHDF in acute renal failure, 13 those effects were not observed in the present study.…”

“…However, effective treatments are not well-established and mortality of these patients has been reported to be high during the short course (3, 6, (8)(9)(10)(11). Here, we report two cases of acute exacerbation of IP treated with PMX hemoperfusion treatment.…”

“…Recent reports have suggested that PMX hemoperfusion treatment may be effective in patients with ALI/ARDS and acute exacerbation of IPF (8,9,11). PMX hemoperfusion treatment can reduce the mortality of ARDS (11) …”

“…It has been reported that direct hemoperfusion with PMX (PMX-DHP) improves oxygenation in patients with acute lung injury or acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), which usually manifests diffuse alveolar damage (12)(13)(14). In addition, PMX-DHP has also been reported to have a beneficial impact in AE-IPF patients on the respiratory status and long-term outcome (15)(16)(17)(18)(19).…”
