Direct tension tests on notched and un-notched plain concrete specimens

Abstract: Direct tension tests were conducted on plain concrete specimens in a stiff loading frame which allowed complete stress-deformation relations to be obtained. The suitability of the specimen shape and the testing apparatus was verified by finite-element analysis. The behaviours of notched and un-notched specimens with different water-cement ratios were examined and compared. Piecewise linear and exponential stress-deformation relations are proposed and interpreted physically. Relationships between fracture param… Show more

“…(3) Testing apparatus: the following modes of gripping the specimens for direct tension test have been adopted by many researchers. They are by means of (1) rings on truncated cones [19], (2) embedded steel bars [20][21][22][23], (3) gluing [11,[24][25][26][27][28][29] and (4) lateral gripping [30,31]. (4) Estimated value: the tensile strength is estimated from the compressive strength using empirical correlation equations [17,18,[32][33][34].…”

“…Smeared crack approach is adopted for analysis [13]. In the post-cracking region, to represent tension stiffening, fracture energy was calculated and assigned according to the formulas given by Phillips and Binsheng [14].…”
