Directional sensing by cooperative chemoreceptor arrays modeled as Monod-Wyman-Changeux clusters

Abstract: Most sensory cells use trans-membrane chemoreceptors to detect chemical signals in the environment. The biochemical properties and spatial organization of chemoreceptors play important roles in achieving and maintaining sensitivity and accuracy of chemical sensing. Here we investigate the effects of receptor cooperativity and adaptation on the physical limits for sensing chemical gradient. We study a single cell with aggregated chemoreceptor arrays on the cell surface and derive general formula to the limits fo… Show more

“…Although several theoretical and experimental works show that receptor cooperativity can play a significant role in chemotaxis (Hu et al, 2010;Yang, 2013;Sourjik, 2004;Aquino et al, 2011), the assumption of independent receptors is still a useful simplification that has been widely used in many theoretical works (Hu et al, 2011b;Mortimer et al, 2010;Shibata and Ueda, 2008;Baba et al, 2012). Cooperativity is difficult to analyze in the general framework in this paper.…”
