Disclosing Solutions Used in Dentistry

Abstract: Dental caries and periodontal diseases are plaque mediated diseases.Poor oral hygiene and inappropriate dietary behaviour can lead to increased plaque accumulation. Dental plaque is a biofilm that is formed over the teeth and prosthetic appliances placed in the oral cavity. As dental plaque is not easily visible to the naked eye, its removal is difficult and complex. In order to remove dental plaque and improve the oral hygiene, the use of disclosing agents has been recommended. Disclosing agents are preparati… Show more

“…The tar pigment erythrosine, otherwise known as Red No.3, is an organo-iodine compound used as a component in dental disclosants 3) . To improve the contrast between the gingival tissue and the stained dental plaque, a 2 Tone dental disclosant in which erythrosine is mixed with Fast Green and Brilliant Blue is commonly used 4) . The 2 Tone dental disclosants stain common plaques in red, while dental plaques that have accumulated low pH bacteria for a long period of time are stained blue.…”

“…3 The dental plaque can be qualitatively assessed using plaque-disclosing products, such as disclosing solution or tablets based on iodine, gentian violet, or erythrosine, which stain plaque a bright color. 5 Surface dental plaque can also be revealed with fluorescence imaging as well. 6,7 However, these methods are often confined to tissue surfaces, and thus may not provide detailed information when monitoring the therapeutic effects and the disease progression.…”

“…(9) Oral biofilm is usually transparent or colorless, which makes it difficult to visualize it for subsequent removal. (11,14,15) Thus, to allow visualization of oral biofilm was developed, disclosing agent, which is a traditional method for staining of biofilm. (8,11,14) However, disclosing agents may cause staining extrinsically in restorative and prosthetic materials, such as acrylic resin and composite resins and resinmodified glass ionomer, causing aesthetic impairment and patient dissatisfaction.…”
