“…However, the emergence of novel pathogen virulence through either sexual or asexual reproduction has rendered most of the existing rust‐resistant inbred lines and commercial hybrids susceptible to rust, which could lead to epidemics when weather conditions are conducive for disease development (Markell et al., 2009; Gong, Gulya, et al., 2013). Among 17 rust R genes, only 7, R 11 , R 12 , R 13a , R 13b , and R 14 – R 16 , remain effectively resistant to all P. helianthi races identified in North America so far (Gong, Gulya, et al., 2013; Ma et al., 2018; Qi et al., 2021).
