Discovery Principles and Materials for Symmetry-Protected Persistent Spin Textures with Long Spin Lifetimes

Abstract: To design materials possessing high-quality persistent spin textures (PSTs), both the spin lifetime (t s) and portion of the Brillouin zone exhibiting the PST (S) require optimization. We find t s and S are optimal with moderate spin-orbit coupling (SOC) parameters. Furthermore, t s and S can be tuned by the magnitude of the BX 6 octahedral rotations in perovskite-derived materials, which governs the PST in a manner opposite to that from intrinsic SOC (D SOC), enabling discovery of optimal PST materials with s… Show more

“…The most prominent electronic feature of the (MA) 2 Pb(SCN) 2 I 2 monolayer is the significant splitting of both valence and conduction band edges along the Γ– Y reciprocal direction, while band splitting is absent along the other planar Γ– Z direction. Such reciprocal direction dependent band splitting originates from the unique spin–orbit field 44,45 within the system.…”

“…50,52,53 The presence of unidirectional electron momentumspin coupling (k y Ás x ) can further lead to the unique PSH state in the (MA) 2 Pb(SCN) 2 I 2 monolayer. 44,45,51 In order to make the unidirectional character associated with the PSH state more obvious, we simulate spin texture for the outer valence and conduction band branches in the 2D Brillouin zone. As shown in Fig.…”

“…[459] Based on theoretical calculations, materials like BiInO 3 and various A 3 B 2 O 7 have been put forth as potential candidates. [364,460,461] The challenge, however, is to make these insulating oxides electrically (semi)conducting with suitable chemical doping to characterize the spin texture. Such studies can further explore the coupling between spin, orbital, and lattice degrees of freedoms in ferroelectrics, leading to nonvolatile spintronic devices like a spin-field-effect transistor.…”

“…[9,14] Specifically, the presence of mirror symmetry in the Cmc2 1 space group would endow symmetry-protected PST around high symmetry points. [15] Such PST is naturally executed by crystal symmetry but does not require a delicate balance between the Rashba and Dresselhaus contributions. When the temper-…”
