Discrete Assembly and Digital Materials in Architecture

Abstract: The paper will discuss two projects which explore the territory of discrete or digital material organisations in an architectural context. Taking inspiration from the field of Digital Materials, this paper presents an approach to architectural design which is fundamentally "digital" -not just in the process but also in its physical organisation. The use of discrete and digital materials in architecture is argued for from both an architectonic point of view, as well as from efficiencies related to automation of… Show more

“…The emergence of new architectural paradigms and technologies in the second digital turn, 37 including discrete architecture 38 and spatial assembly, 39 along with the application of artificial intelligence algorithms in the field of architecture, has introduced fresh perspectives for online housing platforms, encouraging research and experiments into novel ownership models. The project "Nomas" 16 has set up an ownership exchange system: users possess stable spatial states within the platform and can switch between different locations worldwide to adapt to global nomadic lifestyles.…”

“…cars). Hence, 'digital architecture' describes an assemblage of technical aids for architectural production rather than an actual 'paradigm'-we have never actually been digital 10 , as this results in an approach which fails to consider the object itself to be in a consistent feedback loop with its automated production in the design process.…”

“…Geometry of parts defines the number and the orientation of possible connecting units, thus establishing the design morphospace for the local and the global assembly. The part geometries can consist of homogeneous (Sanchez et al 2014;Leder et al 2020;Retsin 2019) or heterogeneous components (Retsin 2016). Variation of part geometries within one system affords increased variability of assemblies and increases the complexity of the design and assembly processes.…”
