Discrete polynuclear manganese(ii) complexes with thiacalixarene ligands: synthesis, structures and photophysical properties

Abstract: The synthesis, crystal structure and photophysical properties of the new compound [Mn4(ThiaSO2)2F][K(18-crown-6)], ThiaSO2 = p-tert-butylsulphonylcalix[4]arene, are presented and compared to the ones of [Mn4(ThiaSO2)2F]K. The strong orange luminescence is attributed to the Mn(2+) centred (4)T1→(6)A1 transition. Its temperature and pressure dependence and quenching by molecular dioxygen are reported. The latter is attributed to energy transfer from the (4)T1 state exciting dioxygen to its (1)∑(+)g state. In the… Show more

“…The electroneutrality of the complex is achieved by the presence of the K + cation, coordinated by sulfonyl and methanol groups (Scheme ). The structure of this aggregate, with a sevenfold [MnO 6 F] coordination polyhedron having approximately C 2 v symmetry, has already been discussed in a previous article , . Compound 2 is composed of two manganese(II) ions with a sixfold [MnO 6 ] coordination polyhedron having approximately O h symmetry, and the macrocycle is in 1,2 alternate conformation (Scheme ).…”

“…These absorption bands are the signature of the ThiaSO 2 calixarene ligand and correspond to n→π* and π→π* transitions, respectively. The molar extinction coefficient ( ε max ) of the intense absorption band of the dinuclear complex at 28410 cm –1 is equal to 47200 m –1 cm –1 , which is approximately 65 % of the compound 1 ( ε max = 72000 m –1 cm –1 ) studied previously …”

“…Recent investigations have shown that many manganese(II) complexes display strong photoluminescence with various emitting colors, such as green, yellow, orange, red, etc., [27][28][29][30] originating from d-d transitions. High emissive quantum Adv.…”
