Discriminant ability and criterion validity of the Trunk Impairment Scale for cerebral palsy

Abstract: The TIS is able to differentiate levels of trunk control across various levels of motor impairments in CP. It is a valid tool to assess trunk control, showing very high concurrent validity with the GMFM sitting dimension. Implications for Rehabilitation Trunk Impairment Scale (TIS) can be used by rehabilitation professionals to differentiate levels of trunk control across levels of motor impairment. TIS showed concurrent validity with Gross Motor Function Measure and should be used to assess trunk control in c… Show more

“…TIS has sufficient reliability, internal consistency, and validity for use in clinical practice. [262728] PAS is an instrument of high inter-rater and intra-rater reliability, high test–retest reliability, assess, and monitor postural control. [2930]…”

“…Therefore, children with SDCP who could sit without support for 10 s on a bench and follow instructions were included. This included children with SDCP from level I to level IV, according to the Gross Motor Function Classification System 26 , 30 . Children with SDCP who had undergone surgery within the preceding six months, or had fixed deformities, intellectual disabilities, or seizures, or were taking anti-epileptic medications were excluded from the study.…”

“…Saether administered the TIS to assess children and adolescents with CP and proved its reliability and validity 16 . In the literature, many authors have conducted studies to establish TIS's performance in assessing children and adolescents with CP and to estimate the TIS's validity and responsiveness 25 , 26 . Many studies proved TIS validity with the Gross Motor Function Measure-88 (GMFM-88); it contains 88 items categorized into five dimensions: lying and rolling, sitting, crawling and kneeling, standing and walking, jumping, and running.…”

“…Sitting balance and gross manual dexterity are related [39,40]. Postural stability and manual dexterity are related to each other [41], and postural stability and motor skills such as GMFCS are likewise related [42]. As improved proximal stability achieved through better trunk control may lead to improvements in upper extremity function [41,43], it may be necessary to focus on trunk impairment to improve self-care in children and adolescents with spastic CP.…”
