Discussion on population kinetics and number densities of excited species of low‐pressure discharge nitrogen plasma

Abstract: A numerical model is constructed to calculate the number densities of some excited species of nitrogen in low-pressure discharge nitrogen plasma, together with simultaneous solution of the self-consistent electron energy distribution function and N 2 -vibration distribution function. We consider species N 2 (X), N 2 (A), N 2 (B), N 2 (C), N 2 (a), N 2 (a ), N + 2 , N + 4 , N( 4 S) and e − . In addition to electron collisional reactions, diffusion losses and molecular relations are included. It is found that th… Show more

Then, the population density of the N 2 C state is expressed as…”

“…It has already been found that the vibrational population is strongly coupled with electron kinetics. 23) Consequently, we consider that a high T e generally raises T v for general low-pressure nitrogen discharge. However, an obvious decrease in the T v of 2PS was observed for a high admixture ratio of 80-96% of Kr or Xe, as shown in Fig.…”

“…Figure 9(b) indicates that the vibrational temperature T v and the rotational temperature T r of the N 2 C state substantially equal values, T v ; T r ; 0.2 eV. On the other hand, the electron temperature of the microwave discharge plasma 25,26) is as high as 3.2-3.6 eV, which is used to excite the N 2 molecule to the C state in microwave discharge, where the reaction can be formulated as below: 29) S +…”

That is, the vibration distribution of the B state must be conserved till the 1PS-radiation loss to the A state.…”
