Disentangling Second Harmonic Generation from Multiphoton Photoluminescence in Halide Perovskites using Multidimensional Harmonic Generation

Abstract: Metal halide perovskites are an intriguing class of semiconductor materials being explored for their linear and non-linear optical, and potentially ferroelectric properties. In particular, layered two-dimensional Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) halide perovskites have shown non-linear optoelectronic properties. Optical second harmonic generation (SHG) is commonly used to screen for non-centrosymmetric and ferroelectric materials, however, SHG measurements of perovskites are complicated by their intense multiphoton phot… Show more

“…NLO properties of perovskite materials have attracted increasing attention. [ 37–42 ] In particular, the exciton effect has been demonstrated to be an important factor for the optimization of perovskite NLO materials. [ 43,44 ] In particular, chiral halide perovskites serve as ideal candidates for SHG because of their asymmetric structures to meet the requirements for second‐order optical nonlinearity.…”

“…Along with exploring the linear optical properties of IHPs and OHPs, there has been a significant interest in deciphering the nonlinear optical (NLO) properties for photonic applications . These include two- and multiphoton absorption processes and third- and higher harmonic generation from OHPs. Because most 3D OHP and IHP systems have a centrosymmetric crystal structure, second harmonic generation (SHG) is not allowed. However, surface effects may break inversion symmetry due to which SHG has been observed in MAPbI 3 ( I 4/ mcm space group) .…”
