Disentangling shadowing from coherent energy loss using the Drell-Yan process

Abstract: We suggest the measurement of Drell-Yan (DY) lepton pairs in p-Pb collisions at the LHC ( √ s = 5.02 TeV) in order to disentangle the relative contributions of shadowing and coherent energy loss in quarkonium production off nuclei. The nuclear modification of low mass DY production is computed at NLO using various sets of nuclear parton densities. It is then observed that shadowing effects strongly cancel out in the J/ψ over DY suppression ratio R ψ pA (y) R DY pA (y), unlike the effect of coherent energy loss… Show more

“…A significant suppression from isospin effects (dashed curve) are expected because of the lesser up quark density in W than in NH 3 nuclear target. 13 Because of the valence quark antishadowing in the EPPS16 set, the inclusion of nPDF corrections increases R πA by up to 5% with respect to the calculation assuming no nuclear effect. 14 On the contrary, energy loss effects would lead to a suppression of the DY yield, increasingly pronounced at larger x F as the phase space available for gluon radiation shrinks.…”

“…At E866 energy and above, the forward DY measurements in pA collisions are therefore most likely due to nPDF effects and hence could be included in the global fit analyses. 12 At LHC, the coming DY mea-surements in pPb collisions at the LHC should thus allow for a clean extraction of nPDF at small x [13].…”
