Dispenser printed proximity sensor on fabric for creative smart fabric applications

Abstract: Abstract-This paper reports, for the first time, a dispenser printed proximity sensor on fabric for wearable creative applications. The entire proximity sensor is dispenser printed onto a woven polyester/cotton fabric which is the predominant fabric used for clothing. Dispenser printing of electronic functions on fabric allows for significantly greater design freedom compared to weaving or knitting. In addition, it is a digital printing process and therefore does not require additional masks or screens compare… Show more

“…Therefore, sintering of conductive inks such as Ag paste is a critical process for the fabrication of conductive patterns . In general, laser‐assisted sintering is preferred because it only heats a specific area, thereby reducing the thermal damage to the structure . As the conductive ink absorbs the laser energy, the resulting heat buildup evaporates the resin binder (polymer) and this causes interconnection between the metal particles; hence, conductive inks ensure electrical conductivity .…”

“…11 Dispenser printed smart fabrics have also been demonstrated for the functions of sound emission, 12 electroluminescence, 13 colour change, 14,15 stretch sensing 16 and proximity sensing. 17 However, each of these demonstrators was printed as single devices with individually programmed printer paths for each layer – this is unsuitable for the targeted creative industry users because of the complexity involved and the specific printing knowledge required. This article presents a universal hardware and software platform dedicated to the design and realisation of smart fabrics for the creative industry.…”
