Dispersal of Owenia fusiformis larvae by wind-driven currents: turbulence, swimming behaviour and mortality in a three-dimensional stochastic model

Abstract: A Lagrangian stochastic larva tracking model based on a 3-dimensional (3D) high resolution wind-driven coastal circulation model is used to study the dispersal of benthic larvae. The larva tracking model includes 3D advection and turbulence, and a species-specific larval swimming behaviour that accounts for ontogenic changes, sensitivity to light exposure and inter-individual variability. Larval mortality can also be included. The dispersal model is applied to Owenia fusiformis larvae, whose swimming behaviour… Show more

“…Some studies have measured both 21 larval concentrations and settlement (e.g., Jeffery and Underwood, 2000;Ma, 2005;Porri et al, 22 2006;Dudas et al, 2009), and recruitment (e.g., Palma et al, 2006;Rilov et al, 2008), to 1 determine the relationship with hydrodynamics. Modelers have also explored the relationship 2 between large-scale hydrodynamics, larval supply and settlement (e.g., Alexander and 3 Roughgarden, 1996;Guizien et al, 2006;Ayata et al, 2009). It has been argued that, ultimately, 4 coarse-to large-scale processes that bring larvae to shore may be more important to determining 5 settlement than smaller scale processes because large-scale processes affect whether larvae are 6 supplied near settlement sites.…”

“…The 3-D primitive equation coastal ocean model SYMPHONIE is described in detail in Estournel et al (1997) and Marsaleix et al (2006). It has recently been used to study the circulation in the Gulf of Lions (Estournel et al 2003;Petrenko et al 2005;Gatti et al 2006), the circulation in the Bay of Fos (Ulses et al 2005) and the Bay of Banyuls (Guizien et al 2006), dense-water formation over the continental shelf (Dufau-Julliand et al 2004) and the circulation in the Catalan Sea (Jorda et al 2006). This model is based on the hydrostatic assumption and the Boussinesq approximation.…”
