ABSTRACT:Composting is a useful way of transforming livestock waste into organic fertilizer, which is proven to increase soil nutrient levels, and thus crop yield. Remains from production and slaughter of small ruminants can become a source of important elements for plant growth, such as N, after microorganism-driven decomposition.The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the effects of this compost on soil fertility and on the nutritional status and yield of the corn crop. The experiment was conducted in a Haplic Luvisol in a randomized block design with six treatments and five application rates of the organic compound in Mg ha -1 : 3 (half the standard rate), 6 (standard rate), 9 (one and a half times the standard rate), 12 (twice the standard rate), and 24 (four times the standard rate) and an additional treatment with mineral fertilizers (110, 50 e 30 kg ha -1 of N, P 2 O 5 and K 2 O, respectively), with four blocks. Evaluations were performed for two harvests of rainfed crops, measuring soil fertility, nutritional status, and grain yield. The compost increased P, K, Na and Zn values in the 0.00-0.20 m layer in relation of mineral fertilization in 616, 21, 114 and 90 % with rate 24 Mg ha -1 in second crop. Leaf N, Mg, and S contents, relative chlorophyll content, and the productivity of corn kernels increased in 27, 32, 36, 20 e 85 %, respectively, of low rate (3 Mg ha -1 ) to high rate (24 Mg ha -1 ) with of application of the compost. Corn yield was higher with application of organic compost in rate of 24 Mg ha -1 than mineral fertilizer combination in second crop.

the use of pig slurry (Ps) as fertilizer can affect the soil quality and increase total stocks of soil organic carbon (tOC). However, the effects of Ps on tOC amount and forms in the soil are not fully understood, particularly in areas under no-tillage (nt). the purpose of this study was to determine tOC contents and stocks in the particulate (POC) and mineral-associated C fractions (MaC) of an Oxisol after nine years of maize-oat rotation under nt, with annual applications of Ps, soluble fertilizer and combined fertilization (pig slurry + soluble fertilizer). the experiment was initiated in 2001 in Campos novos, santa Catarina, with the following treatments: Ps at rates of 0 (without fertilization -Ps0); 25 (Ps25); 50 (Ps50); 100 (Ps100); and 200 m 3 ha -1 yr -1 (Ps200); fertilization with soluble fertilizer (sF); and mixed fertilization (Ps + sF). the tOC content was determined in samples of six soil layers to a depth of 40 cm, and the POC and MaC contents in four layers to a depth of 20 cm. From the rate of 50 m 3 ha -1 yr -1 and upwards, the soil tOC content and stock increased according to the Ps rates in the layers to a depth of 10 cm. the POC and MaC contents and stocks were higher in the surface layers, with a clear predominance of the second fraction, but a greater relative amplitude in the contents of the first fraction.

A B S T R A C TCrop systems that export large amounts of nutrients from the farm may require higher doses of animal manure than those needed for grain production. This study aimed to evaluate the yield of crops and to determine the simplified nutrient balance in three management systems of shoot biomass of crops (cover-grain, cover-silage and hay-silage) associated with five fertilization treatments (control, soluble fertilizer and three doses of pig slurry). The experimental design was a split plot, arranged in randomized blocks with four replicates. The management systems of shoot biomass did not affect the yield of the winter pasture, but there was an increase in yield with the application of pig slurry. The summer crops responded differently to fertilization, depending on the purpose for which they were grown, whether for grain or silage. In the three management systems of shoot biomass, there was an excess of Zn and Cu from the application of 25 m 3 ha -1 ; N from 50 m 3 ha -1 ; and P, K and Ca + Mg at the dose of 100 m 3 ha -1 .Rendimento de cultura e balanço de nutrientes influenciados por manejos da fitomassa e dejetos suínos R E S U M O Sistemas de culturas que exportam grandes quantidades de nutrientes da lavoura podem demandar doses mais altas de dejetos animais do que aquelas necessárias à produção de grãos. Objetivou-se avaliar o rendimento de culturas e determinar o balanço simplificado de nutrientes em três sistemas de manejo da fitomassa aérea das culturas (coberturagrãos, cobertura-silagem e fenação-silagem) associados a cinco tratamentos de adubação (testemunha, adubo solúvel e três doses de dejeto líquido de suínos). Os sistemas de manejo da fitomassa aérea não afetaram o rendimento de massa seca da pastagem de inverno mas houve incremento no seu rendimento com a aplicação de dejeto. As culturas de verão responderam de forma diferenciada à adubação, em função da finalidade para a qual foram cultivadas, se para grãos ou silagem. Nos três sistemas de manejo da fitomassa houve excedente de Zn e Cu a partir da aplicação de 25 m 3 ha -1 ; de N a partir de 50 m 3 ha -1 e de P, K e Ca + Mg na dose de 100 m 3 ha -1 .
