Abstract:Heterotrophic bacteria in the ocean initiate biopolymer degradation using extracellular enzymes that yield low molecular weight hydrolysis products in the environment, or by using a selfish uptake mechanism that retains the hydrolysate for the enzyme‐producing cell.
