Distinct Genetic Structure Reflects Ploidy Level Differentiation in Newly Discovered, Extremely Small Populations of Xanthocyparis vietnamensis from Southwestern China

Abstract: Population genetic assessment is crucial for the conservation and management of threatened species. Xanthocyparis vietnamensis is an endangered species that is currently restricted to karst mountains in southwestern China and Vietnam. This rare conifer was first recorded in 2002 from northern Vietnam and then in 2013 from Guangxi, China, yet nothing is known about its genetic diversity nor ploidy level variation, although previous cytological study suggest that Vietnamese populations are tetraploids. There hav… Show more

“…This transition can be both exciting and overwhelming as it brings about uncertainties and questions, about capabilities fitting into roles or finding the right professional or academic paths (Frey, Fisher, & Smith, 2019) interests they can chart a path that does not bring professional success but also personal fulfillment. Neaves (Jiang et al, 2021) explore the advantages of this approach highlighting that students who make choices based on authenticity tend to experience levels of satisfaction and resilience in their endeavors. The realm of academia extends beyond the pursuit of knowledge and intellect; it is a community comprising diverse individuals each, with their own unique emotional and psychological journeys.…”

“…Owing to their unique terrains, island‐like Karst and Danxia landscapes are home to large numbers of species with an extraordinary degree of endemism (Clements et al, 2006; Liu et al, 2021). Currently, progress have been made in characterizing the geographic patterns of species richness and endemism in Karst and Danxia landscapes (Chung et al, 2014; Xu et al, 2021; Yang et al, 2021b; Li et al, 2022; Huang et al, 2023), though only several studies focused on the population genetics of the Karst and Danxia endemics (Wang et al, 2017; Jiang et al, 2021; Chen et al, 2022).…”
