Distinction by Micro-Raman Spectroscopy and Chemometrical Analysis of Copper Phthalocyanine Blue Polymorphs in Oil-Based and Acrylic Paint Samples

Abstract: Copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) blue, commonly named phthalo blue is the most important synthetic organic blue pigment in the twentieth and twentyfirst century artists paints. Phthalo blue, which is adopted by artists since 1936, is a polymorphous pigment. Currently, the˛,ˇand "-CuPc polymorphs are used in artists paint formulations. The identification of the CuPc crystal form provides technical and chronological information relevant for studying artworks. Raman Spectroscopy (RS) is a very valuable technique for … Show more

“…The blue (AFC110 and AFC154) and green (AFC 264) inks were found to contain PB15:3, a blue copper phthalocyanine (CuPc). Its identification was possible taking care to use a constant Raman setting in order to allow for comparison with reference pigments [55]. The spectra of the PB15:3 standard and AFC110 show several characteristic bands: a very intense band at 1530 cm -1 allowing for the β-polymorph (PB15:3) discrimination, and others at 1338, 680 [56], and 230 cm -1 .…”
