Abstract: Background: Surgeons often encounter patients with intestinal failure due to inadequate intestinal length (“short bowel syndrome”/SBS). Treatment in these patients remains challenging and the process of physiologic adaptation may take years to complete, which frequently requires parenteral nutrition.
