“…These results are in contrast to observations by Félix‐Hackradt, Sanchis‐Martínez, Hackradt, Treviño‐Otón, and García‐Charton () who reported that although P. gibbesi showed a fine‐scale variability, protection measures did not negatively affected its abundance within the marine reserve of Cabo de Palos‐Islas Hormigas (Spain). Part of this discrepancy could be explained by the different level of protection considered in the case studies: the no‐take zones at Ustica Island and Capo Gallo Isola delle Femmine MPAs and the partial protection at Cabo de Palos‐Islas Hormigas Marine Reserve.…”

“…Part of this discrepancy could be explained by the different level of protection considered in the case studies: the no‐take zones at Ustica Island and Capo Gallo Isola delle Femmine MPAs and the partial protection at Cabo de Palos‐Islas Hormigas Marine Reserve. As stated by Félix‐Hackradt et al (), human activities allowed within MPAs with multiple‐use areas (i.e. artisanal fishing and recreational activities) can cause severe damage to trophic relationships (e.g.…”

“…Only one of the five species of decapods observed during this study, T. holthuisi, appears to associate exclusively with echinoids (Marin & Anker, 2009). However, Percnon gibbesi usually associates with echinoids of four species, especially Diadema antillarum, in the Caribbean Sea (Hayes et al, 2016), but it has not been reported associating with any echinoids in the Pacific Ocean or where it has been introduced in the Mediterranean Sea (Félix-Hackradt et al, 2018). Our observations confirm that P. gibbesi also associates with echinoids in the eastern Pacific Ocean.…”

“…As part of the concerned crustaceans, the mitten crab Eriocheir sinensis and the mud crab Rhithropanopeus harrisii are included in ABI, having been firstly detected in the Miño and Guadalquivir estuaries, respectively. The presence of the crab Percnon gibbesi in Spanish Mediterranean waters is noteworthy, where it has rapidly proliferated in the last 20 years [65,66], probably aided by shipping but also natural spread from its native range in the subtropical NE Atlantic. In WMED, the mud crab Dyspanopeus sayi is also relevant, with established populations in the Levantine-Balearic MRU.…”
