Distribution Characteristics and Formation Mechanisms of Highly Mineralized Groundwater in the Hetao Plain, Inner Mongolia

Abstract: As the largest artesian irrigation area in northern China, the Hetao Plain is also one of the major grain-producing areas in China. Meanwhile, there is a large amount of highly mineralized groundwater resulting in the soil salinization and desertification in this region. In addition, this study also uses the traditional hydro-geochemical methods to investigate the spatial evolution characteristics and formation mechanisms of highly mineralized groundwater. The results indicate that there is a large amount of h… Show more

“…The classification method of formation water used in this research is mainly based on the Sulin water classification method. According to the Sulin classification method [29,30], the chemical composition of groundwater can be linked with its natural environmental conditions, and different geological environments can be represented by different water types [31,32].…”

“…High salinity is also observed in the shallow aquifers of the Nile River delta (Elewa & El Nahry, 2009) and arid basins of the Chilean Altiplano (Hernández‐López et al, 2014). The Hetao plain located in Inner Mongolia, China has also experienced widespread soil salinization as a result of excessive soil mineralization and the presence of a shallow WT (Dong et al, 2002; Li et al, 2020; Wang et al, 2004; Zhang et al, 2020). A number of studies examined solute transport patterns for different surface evaporation and water application conditions (Ibrahimi et al, 2014; Öztürk & Özkan, 2002, 2004; Rose et al, 2005; Wang et al, 2017).…”

“…Their research shows that considerable spatial and temporal variability was found in the seasonal groundwater levels of the two aquifers, a trend of seawater intrusion, and an urgent need for appropriate measures for groundwater protection. Other scholars, such as Dong Q, have conducted systematic studies on the characteristics of groundwater chemistry in the Hetao Plain, the lower Yangtze River alluvial plain, and the Sichuan basin, revealing the groundwater genesis and evolutionary processes [20][21][22][23].…”
