Distribution Characteristics and Risk Assessment of Mercury in Sediments From Taihu Lake

Abstract: Persistent pollutants are easily accumulated in sediments, which can cause toxicity to benthos and secondary pollution to water. Mercury (Hg), as one kind of bioaccumulative and persistent pollutant, could cause great harm to water ecology and health, and has been widely concerned. The distribution characteristics and ecological risk of Hg in sediments from Taihu Lake were studied. In addition, the sediment quality criterion (SQC) of Hg was derived using tissue-based toxicity data combined with the phase-equil… Show more

“…A risk quotient (RQ) index was estimated to describe the possible hazard of Hg contaminants in the ecosystem, where the Hg concentration value was divided by the predicted no-effect concentration (PNEC) of Hg (0.04 mg kg -1 ) (F.5) (X. Li et al, 2019;Shao et al, 2020;Su et al, 2021).…”

“…It is situated in a region with a subtropical monsoon climate (Kang et al, 2015). In addition to its uses for irrigation, shipping, and aquaculture, Taihu Lake serves as a major source of drinking water for the surrounding cities (Su et al, 2021). Situated in the southern region of Jiangsu Province, Taihu Lake forms a critical part of the Yangtze River Delta.…”
