Large quantities of pesticide packaging wastes have been thrown and abandoned in farmlands and surrounding environments, which is not only difficult to degrade but also posing a potential pollution threat to agricultural produce and the ecological environment due to the high concentration residues of pesticide. The Chinese government has formulated a series of policies and measures and established some recycling pilot provinces. However, the intervention effects of different kinds of policies on pesticide packaging waste recycling by farmers’ and its mechanism were still unknown. This study took the pilot province Jiangsu Province as the example, by using the game theory and propensity score matching (PSM) model to analyze and compare the intervention effects of three kinds of pesticide packaging waste recycling policies, that is, punish, subsidy and reward, and mortgage return. The results showed that the three kinds of policies all positively affected farmers’ recycling behaviors in the pilot area. The incentive effect of the punishment policy was the weakest, and the mortgage return policy was prominent with the recycling probability increasing 44.8% under a single policy. Based on these results, some policy suggestions were put forward as follows: improving farmers’ cognition of environmental pollution caused by pesticide packaging waste and their awareness of environmental protection, establishing the necessary administrative punishment policy, increasing financial support and improving the standard of recycling subsidies, and vigorously promoting the mortgage return recovery policy in areas where conditions permit. So as to stimulate the willingness of pesticide users to recover independently, the government should reduce the cost of administrative law enforcement and contribute to the construction of rural ecological civilization.

Effects of different microbial agents on bedding treatment of ectopic fermentation of buffalo manure

IntroductionThe rapid development of the farming industry has increased the amount of manure produced by livestock and poultry, causing increasingly prominent environmental pollution problems. In recent years, due to the increase in conventional bedding material costs, an increasing number of farmers choose to use harmless recycled manure as bedding. Manure bedding treatment of farms can not only solve the problem of manure pollution, but also resource utilization of manure and cost savings.MethodsThis study compared the effects of five microbial agents (Microbial agents A, B, C, E, F) on buffalo manure bedding treatment by testing the temperature, moisture content, pH, microbial bacteria distribution of buffalo manure ectopic fermentation, and screened the lowest cost and most effective agent. The changes of microbial bacteria distribution in different periods of bedding treatment were also detected.ResultsAgent A was eliminated because of poor fermentation effect and low fermentation temperature, which could not achieve the effect of harmless treatment. The other four agents of bacteria achieved a harmless effect, but the bedding treatment effect of agent F was significantly better than agent E, B, and C. In terms of the cost of agents: the cost of agent F required for fermenting 100m³ buffalo manure was the lowest, 1000yuan, followed by E (1200yuan), C (1750yuan), and B (1980yuan). In the process of ectopic fermentation bedding treatment of buffalo manure, Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Chloroflexi were the major bacteria used. The process was divided into three periods; the heating period - high temperature period - cooling period, the high temperature period could reach more than 75°C, and a large number of pathogenic bacteria and harmful bacteria, and other miscellaneous bacteria in the pile were degraded, their species diversity was reduced, and the structure of bacterial flora had significant differences in different treatment periods. In conclusion, this study has provided a guide for the resource utilization of manure in cattle farms and the reduction of manure pollution to the environment.

Estimating farmers’ internal value of crop residues in smallholder crop-livestock systems: A South Asia case study

Crop residues (CR) are an important, internally produced resource with several uses on smallholder, mixed crop-livestock farms, including livestock feed, mulch, fuel and construction material. This study sets out to develop a method to estimate the internal shadow value of CR as feed and as mulch for smallholder households. The study uses a South Asia case study as illustration using data from a set of village and household surveys in three different sites. The estimated shadow prices were higher for CR as mulch than for CR as feed at all three sites. These results reject the null hypothesis that the estimated shadow price for CR as feed is greater than the shadow price for CR as mulch. Since the null hypothesis was formed based on observing household behavior, the rejection of the null hypothesis implies that there are other reasons to explain why more households use CR as feed versus as mulch.
