In order to investigate the relationship of freshwater ostracods with some of those physico-chemicals and sediment phosphate concentrations, 97 shallow aquatic bodies were sampled during July 2014 in the Sinop province (Turkey). A total of 3083 individuals belonging to 28 ostracod taxa are reported from 76 of 97 sites. While 24 of these taxa were firstly reported from the province, Bradleytr iebella tuberculata is a newly reported species for Turkish Ostracoda fauna. Species diversity (H'=1.87) increased around the middle elevations (601-750 m) whereas it was decreased in low and high elevations. Results of ANOSIM analyses exhibited no significant difference among species composition of eight groups with 150 m elevational range (P>0.05). Cosmoecious species occurred in almost all elevational ranges whereas others seemed to prefer low to middle elevational ranges. A significant effect of water temperature, magnesium content of water, and total organic phosphate of sediments (P<0.05) were observed on ostracod assemblages. It appears that rather than number of sampling sites, habitat quality and spatial differences played critical roles on the species diversity.

In order to determine distribution, habitat and ecological preferences of Darwinula stevensoni, data gathered from 102 samples collected in Turkey between 2000 and 2017 was evaluated. A total of 1786 individuals of D. stevensoni were reported from eight different aquatic habitats in 14 provinces in six of seven geographical regions of Turkey. Although there are plenty of samples from Central Anatolia Region, recent form of the species was not encountered. Unlike recent, fossil forms of species were encountered in all geographic regions except Southeastern Anatolia. The oldest fossil record in Turkey was reported from the Miocene period (ca 23 mya). Species occurred in all climatic seasons in Turkey. D. stevensoni showed high optimum and tolerance levels to different ecological variables. Results showed a positive and negative significant correlations of the species with pH (P<0.05) and elevation (P<0.01), respectively. It seems that the ecological preferences of the species are much wider than previously known. Our results suggest that if D. stevensoni is used to estimate past and present environmental conditions, attention and care should be paid on its ecology and distribution.

Habitat destruction in wetland affects Ostracoda (Crustacea) species occurrence patterns amid different aquatic habitats

To outline influence of anthropogenic activities on natural aquatic habitats such as wetlands, we sampled ostracods along with measuring several different aquatic variables at four different aquatic bodies between 2019 and 2020 in the Hıdırs ¸eyhler Village (Bolu, Turkey). We found 15 living and 10 subfossil ostracods. Species with high tolerances (Eucypris virens) and/or with swimming abilities (Cypria ophtalmica) were reported from the canal and wetland. Non-swimmer ostracods (e.g., Prionocypris zenkeri) were only found from the creek. Ostracod Watch Model illustrated some species with stenochronal and eurychronal (e.g., Heterocypris incongruens) occurrences per site. CCA results displayed that water temperature and electrical conductivity were the most important explanatory variables on species. Unbiased diversity indices revealed the highest diversity in the canal followed by the creek, wetland, and trough. Wetland diversity exhibited positive and negative correlations with the canal and the creek, respectively. Tukey's pairwise test supported the significant comparisons between the trough, canal, and wetland (p \ 0.01). The ratio of tolerant species per station was slightly higher in the canal than the wetland, trough, and creek. This suggests the fact that species encountered from the creek seem to be habitat specific and may be considered more vulnerable to changes in aquatic conditions. Frequency of species encountered in three habitats (wetland, canal, and trough) was significantly changed after the construction (digging and converting the wetland) activities began in August 2019. This activity was a negative impact on species diversity and richness in the wetland area where the diversity sharply dropped down and did not recover during the study. In contrast, this was probably advantage for some cosmoecious species.
