Selenium concentration in soil is of great importance for the production of selenium-rich crops. In this article, we studied the geochemical characteristics of soil selenium and evaluated selenium-rich land resources in the Guiyang city area using results from a Guizhou multi-purpose regional geochemical survey. The results indicate that 1) the selenium content in topsoil in the Guiyang area ranges from 0.11 to 4.12 mg kg−1, with an average value of 0.70 mg kg−1, which is 2.4 times and 3.5 times the national and world soil background values, respectively, while the selenium content in deep soil ranges from 0.11 to 4.10 mg kg−1, with an average value of 0.42 mg kg−1, which is 1.4 and 2.1 times the national and world soil background values, respectively; in the vertical profile, the selenium content in soil decreases with the increase in soil depth. 2) The main factors affecting the distribution of selenium in soil include soil parent material, soil physical and chemical properties, and other components, such as soil type and land use, among which the soil parent material (rock) plays a decisive role. The selenium in soil mainly comes from the soil parent rock, increasing accordingly with the increase of the selenium background value of the parent rock; the physical and chemical properties of the soil and other components impose certain influences on the selenium content. Selenium presents a significant linear positive correlation with sulfur and organic carbon, while it has a negative correlation with the pH value; there is no significant difference in the selenium content in different soil types, following the distribution order of paddy soil >yellow soil> skeletal soil> lime soil> purple soil; land use has a certain effect on selenium in soil, following the distribution order of garden land > construction land > grassland > farmland > rocky hills > forest land. 3) The area of selenium-enriched soil in the study region is 11,408 km2, with 91.76% of selenium-enriched soil and 8.24% of general soil or extremely little excess-selenium soil. Therefore, the vast majority of soil in Guiyang is selenium-enriched. The city has large and abundant selenium-enriched areas, which are domestically and internationally rare and provides particularly favorable resource conditions for developing selenium-enriched efficient mountain agriculture to expedite rural revitalization.

This study employs the Muller geological accumulation index method and the Hakanson risk assessment method in combination with ArcGIS technology to assess the potential heavy metal pollution in soil. The study aims to investigate the geochemical characteristics, pollution degree, and potential ecological risks associated with soil heavy metal element content and distribution across various geological formations. The concentrations of eight heavy metals, namely Cu, Cd, Ni, Pb, Zn, Hg, As, and Cr, were analysed by collecting samples of the soil layer, parent material layer, and parent rock layer. The proportions of samples with different risk levels are accurately calculated to locate areas with high pollution risks. The findings are as follows: Firstly, the soil pH value in the study area is low, and the Cd and Cr concentrations are 1.38 and 1.20 times the background concentrations in soil in Sichuan Province, respectively. Moreover, Cu, Cd, Ni, Zn, and Cr concentrations are 1.23, 1.10, 1.20, 1.10, and 1.55 times the background concentrations in soil in China. Secondly, the distribution of heavy metal elements varies across different geological formation units, and the heavy metal contents of different samples from the same formation also varies significantly. The concentrations of heavy metal elements are influenced by different geological formations, with the pedogenic parent rock in the soil determining the initial concentrations of heavy metal elements. Thirdly, the spatial distribution of heavy metal elements indicates a good spatial distribution coupling relationship among the soil layer, parent material layer, and rock layer. The study suggests that the contents of the eight heavy metal elements in the soil inherited the characteristics of the parent material to a large extent and are influenced and controlled by the pedogenic parent rock (geological formation). Finally, the evaluation results reveal that all eight heavy metal elements exhibit moderate pollution, with a relatively large distribution area exhibiting moderate Cd, Hg, and As pollution and above. The overall study area exhibits a mild potential ecological risk level, with some areas at a moderate potential ecological risk level, distributed in patches across the study area. Cd and Hg exhibit relatively high potential ecological risks. The potential ecological risks of heavy metals are relatively high in the JKms and Tss units. While the overall quality of the soil in the study area is good, heavy metal pollution and potential ecological risks of some elements are still above ideal levels.

This study aims to determine the characterization of alluvial soil as a place to grow Chinese betel (peperomia pellucida L.) in Ambon city. Parameters studied included morphological characterization of alluvial soil and description of Chinese betel nut (Peperomia pellucid a L.). The results of observations in the field and analysis of soil samples in the laboratory that have been collected are used as material to identify soil morphological characterization. Meanwhile Chinese betel nut (Peperomia pellucid a L.) collected from alluvial soil was selectively explored by exploring the research area using the Cruise Method. Furthermore, a phytochemical test was carried out to determine its phytochemical content. The results showed that the color of the soil and the rusty color of the alluvial soil in Ambon City was generally brown. The alluvial soil structure at the study site has an O horizon with a soil layer thickness of 17 cm, an A horizon with a thickness of 45 cm soil lumpy structure and a Bw horizon with a soil thickness of 30 cm and the C horizon with a thickness of 65 cm is classified as having a globular lumpy soil structure, It has a high clay and silt content. The lower the soil solum, the lower the C-organic content. The soil in Ambon city has moderate fertility. Low base saturation is associated with low C-organic content in the soil. Chinese sirih that grows on alluvial soil types in Ambon City contains several classes of compounds that are beneficial to health like flavonoids, alkaloids, tripenoids, phenolics, tannins and saponins so that they have ethnomedicin effects such as anticancer, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, antihypertensive and antioxidant activities.
