Diversifying crops for food and nutrition security - a case of teff

Abstract: There are more than 50000 known edible plants in the world, yet two-thirds of global plant-derived food is provided by only three major cereals - maize (Zea mays), wheat (Triticum aestivum) and rice (Oryza sativa). The dominance of this triad, now considered truly global food commodities, has led to a decline in the number of crop species contributing to global food supplies. Our dependence on only a few crop species limits our capability to deal with challenges posed by the adverse effects of climate change a… Show more

“…Cheesman) (Harlan, , ; Khoury et al, ). Whilst coffee has become one of the most highly traded global commodity crops (Ponte, ), and others have widespread and growing international importance (e.g., tef, [Cheng, Mayes, Dalle, Demissew, & Massawe, ]), enset has remained largely overlooked. It is perhaps the only major Ethiopian domesticated crop that has never been cultivated outside Ethiopia, despite wild populations of E. ventricosum occurring from Ethiopia, and eastern DR Congo (along the rift valley mountain ranges) to South Africa (Figure ).…”

“…Examples of these approaches may be found in [1][2][3][4]. e cereals are the main ingredient of human food, where only grains are used for human nutrition [5,6]. e grains are consumed either whole or ground to our, which exhibits di erent nal granulation and/or chemical composition.…”

“…e grains are consumed either whole or ground to our, which exhibits di erent nal granulation and/or chemical composition. Wheat is one of the world's leading food crops and is one of the most grown cereals [5] as a source of white wheat products: white bread, toasts, baguettes, hamburgers, croissants, and pizza's dough. e possibilities of NTP treatment of wheat grains in agrotechnical practices have been studied by many scienti c teams in the one recent decade.…”

“…The diversification via alternative crops and cultivated varieties is the main approach to guaranty a balanced diet (Chloupek, Hrstkova, & Schweigert, ; Hawkesworth et al., ). Many underutilized crops have specific qualitative properties (taste, nutrition, health, and so on); they are part of the rational nutrition, therapeutic diets and are recognized as functional food (Cheng, Mayes, Dalle, Demissew, & Massawe, ).…”
